Health Screenings & Selecting Our Breeding Pairs

When breeding Staffordshire Bull Terriers, it’s essential to prioritize the health of both the breeding pairs and their puppies. Here are the common health screenings I conduct:

1. L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria (L-2HGA) Testing

L-2HGA is a metabolic disorder that can cause neurological symptoms in Staffordshire Bull Terriers, including seizures, tremors, and behavioral changes. I perform DNA testing on all breeding pairs to identify carriers and ensure I never breed two carriers together, eliminating the risk of producing affected puppies.

2. Eye Examination

Staffordshire Bull Terriers can be susceptible to hereditary cataracts, particularly juvenile cataracts and posterior polar subcapsular cataracts (PPSC). I have both parents examined annually by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist certified through the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) or through OFA eye certification to ensure they are free from hereditary eye diseases.

3. Hip Evaluation

Hip dysplasia can affect Staffordshire Bull Terriers, though it’s less common than in larger breeds. I ensure that both parents undergo hip evaluations through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) or PennHIP to assess their hip health and receive a score before breeding.

4. Patellar Luxation Screening

Staffies can be prone to patellar luxation, where the kneecap slips out of place. I have both parents evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure their patellas are properly positioned and grade at OFA standards, reducing the risk of passing this condition to puppies.

5. Elbow Evaluation

While less common than hip issues, elbow dysplasia can occur in Staffordshire Bull Terriers. I have the breeding pairs screened for elbow health through OFA evaluation to minimize the risk of passing on this condition.

6. Cardiac Evaluation

Heart health is important in any breeding program. I have breeding pairs screened for congenital heart defects through cardiac auscultation and, when appropriate, echocardiography to ensure they are not predisposed to any cardiac issues.

7. Skin Health Assessment

Staffordshire Bull Terriers can be prone to skin allergies and conditions. I carefully evaluate the skin health and allergy history of both parents, avoiding breeding dogs with chronic skin issues to reduce the likelihood of passing on these sensitivities.

8. Genetic Testing Panel

I perform comprehensive DNA testing for breed-specific genetic conditions and to verify parentage. This helps in making informed breeding decisions and tracking genetic diversity within my breeding program.

9. General Health Check

A comprehensive veterinary examination is performed to assess the overall health of both parents. This includes checking for any signs of illness, ensuring proper vaccinations are current, verifying appropriate body condition, assessing temperament stability, and reviewing their complete medical history.

10. Temperament Evaluation

Beyond physical health, I carefully assess the temperament of both parents. Staffordshire Bull Terriers should be confident, friendly with people, and stable in disposition. I only breed dogs with sound temperaments to ensure puppies inherit the breed’s characteristic affectionate and trustworthy nature.

By conducting these health screenings, I aim to ensure that my breeding pairs are healthy and that their puppies have the best possible start in life. This commitment to responsible breeding practices helps promote the overall health, longevity, and well-being of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed.
